Eric is directing the next show at the theatre.  He’s asked me to [1] assistant direct, [2] make costumes, [3] arrange props.  Because I’m assistant directing, he wanted me to watch auditions and give my advice.  He needed to cast 3 men and 4 women. Because auditions had spotty attendance, he asked if I could stand in and read some of the parts in the audition pieces.  This is nothing I haven’t done before and while I don’t really enjoy it, it would be hard for him to read a part from offstage and still –really- watch auditions.  By the end of the day on Sunday [day 2 of auditions], I noticed he was asking me to read more than what was really necessary.  In fact, some of the girls who came to audition for real were just sitting…  I figured he was just doing it to annoy me ;)

Strangely… no.  He’s offered me the lead.

I’m not sure how I feel about that.

But… as the lead female, I will get to kiss the hot guy from Starbucks ;)  A lot. And I don't have to run around in my bra like the other actress would ;)

Upcoming Hurricanes

I'd like to see more damage assessments for hurricanes hitting New York and flooding Manhattan -- something like the 1938 Long Island Express, but aimed a bit more to the west. It's just a matter of time.

I was out of state for a while, so it's been a long time since I've done one of these.

This one isn't very funny, but sometimes it's difficult to find pictures that coincide with a president's events during his presidency.

...As some of you know (though perhaps not all of you), last night was my final night as resident DJ of Chapel Perilous, ending a two and a half year run with Chapel/Axis. My reason for leaving has to do with the fact that I am broke, am having to move at the end of this month (to South Bend), and am generally entering a new phase of my life and will be unable to sustain my responsibilities with Chapel. There is certainly a likelihood that I will be returning to spin on occasion, but that of course will hinge on my availability. There is also a possibility that I may even move back (perhaps even within a few months), but again, everything is very much up in the air for me right now and I make no promises.

So you're new resident DJ is.... well, we'll make that announcement once [info]lordlothair, [info]styossarian and I have arrived at a consensus and deem it appropriate to do so. For now, I'd just like to take the opportunity to thank each and every person involved in making Axis/Chapel happen over the years (that includes those of you with responsibilities as well as those of you who just came to dance), as it certainly filled a void in me for the past few years. It's been a blast.

P.S. Also, if you'd like to donate to the "Freeze Etch is confused and broke and virtually homeless" fund, I still have many CDs available. Just drop me a line if you want one.

What a Weinerism!!!

Posted by [info]gidster on 2008.07.22 at 13:31
AP NEW YORK — Radio talk show host Michael Savage, Who's real name is Mickey Weiner described 99 percent of children with autism as brats, he said Monday he was trying to "boldly awaken" parents to his view that many people are being wrongly diagnosed.

Some parents of autistic children have called for Savage's firing after he described autism as a racket last week. "In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out," Savage said on his radio program last Wednesday. He has said that autism is not a disease, it is a case of children with no father not being told to shut up. He also mentioned that the asthma epidemic in inner city children is a just a ruse to get more welfare money.

Savage offered no apology in a message posted Monday on his Web site. He said greedy doctors and drug companies were creating a "national panic" by overdiagnosing autism, a mental disorder that inhibits a person's ability to communicate.

His toxic radio show has been used as a forum against gays, women, and minorities. From what I hear, he has a lot of people tuning in, but has trouble getting sponsors. I hear that a J.C. Penney, Geico, and Intuit have dropped him because he said the Senate has been ruined because women are in it, he was fired from MSNBC when he wished AIDS on a caller. What will it take to make his presence unwelcome on all the airwaves? Arson? Murder? Authoring a book entitled "Bin Laden was Just Misunderstood?

Besides what goes on in a guys mind to change his name from Weiner to Savage? Issues anyone?

water, n. [waw-ter, -tər]
-Seeing as it is such a basic element of life and human civilization, it makes sense that water is a very old word. Old English wæter was in use prior to the turn of the 10th century and has many similarly ancient relatives: Old Saxon watar, Old Frisian wetir, Middle Dutch water, Old High German wazzar, Old Norse vatn, and Gothic wato, 'water.' All these stem from proto-Germanic water, though they broke into two categories - those nouns that developed with an r, like Old English wæter, and those that developed with an n, as Old Norse vatn. Proto-Germanic watar came from the prehistoric Indo-European root wed-, which itself had three off-shoots: wodor, wedor, uder. The first two were retained in Germanic languages. Wodor, after the d sound hardened to a t, was the direct ancestor of proto-Germanic watar. The root in the second branch, wedor, became proto-Germanic wet, which led to Old English wǣt and English wet. Finally, uder was the basis for early Greek hud-or 'water' and the basis for the the prefix hydro. Other creations from this prehistoric Indo-European root are Hittite watar, Sanskrit udnah, Old Church Slavonic voda, Lithuanian vanduo, Old Prussian wundan, Gaelic uisge 'water,' and Latin unda 'wave.'

Side note:
To the member who requested two shakes of a stick, unfortunately I could not find much on it. It seems to be a variant of two shakes of a lamb's tail which was used to describe something happening very quickly since a lamb can apparently shake its tail twice in the blink of an eye. This latter phrase's origin was unclear as well, though I found a mid-19th century citation of it. Exactly when and where it came from, however, I could not find out. If anyone can help us out, it would be much appreciated!

Recently I wrote a response to an article on Daily Ko's. Monica Gable writes about GW cheerleading his policies while the economy goes down the toilet. He says he does not see it, that it is merely "A time of uncertainty".

I replied that at Bush's behest, Greenspan worked hard to keep the status quo and nothing else.

dream smasher writes:

If you really must blame someone then you should blame the Democrats!
The economy was good, unemployment was at its lowest, inflation was down and we were in a war sucking the life out of us and gas was more or less two dollars a gallon, now the Democrats are in control of Congress, remember them? they are the ones that make the laws and raise our taxes and most of all spend money they don't have, and now the economy has gone to crap, the inflation rate is out of control, unemployment is rising the war is getting better (it still needs to end) and gas has skyrocketed to four dollars a gallon plus and all of this happened AFTER the Democrats took control of Congress yet YOU still blame Bush.
Might I remind you that it is the Republicans who want to drill off the continental shelf and Alaska and it is the Democrats who oppose it.
And BTW it is the Democrats who want to raise the fuel tax another ten cents per gallon which will hurt the exact same people whom they claim they are trying to help and a year from now you and all of the Democrats will be trying to convince everyone else that it was Bush who screwed the poor one last time before leaving office

I found this funny. Obviously this guy is a ditto head, and only visits Ko's and HuffPo to write drivel, so I replied at HP and on his personal blog:

What are you smoking? All this happened starting Sept. 12 2001! That was when the markets went berserk, that was when Karl Rove and the Republican controlled congress shoved the Patriot Act down our throats! This administration has done more harm to American interests at home and abroad than any three Democratic ones!

This administration is firmly looking out for the best interests of only wealthy Americans, i.e., themselves. Tax cuts for the richest? When there is a war to be paid for?
Your grand children will be paying for this war that your beloved Republican party rubber stamped their approval. It seems that the economy was doing well, unemployment was down and there was a surplus in the general fund BEFORE Bush took office.
Stop parroting this jingoistic BS and get your information straight!

Hopefully dreamsmasher will write back with more misinformation to destroy for my own amusment BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

[info]gothiclibrarian and I were taking goth photos this weekend, LOL!

Wow, it's been a couple of weeks since I've posted. I still find time to read every weekday, just haven't made a post. I've basically spent the last couple of weeks making preps for the baby, and trying to just spend some time with the wife as a couple, seeing as how the days of that are numbered!

A couple of weeks ago, on the third, since I had won a night at the Hamption Inn Downtown through one of those team-building days at work, we spent the weekend downtown for our 9th anniversary, Wining and Dining, eating out for lunch Thursday (McCormick's and Schmicks), dinner Thursday (Palomino), Breakfast Friday (Hampton Inn), Lunch Friday (at a party), leftovers for dinner Friday, Breakfast Saturday (City Cafe), Dinner with Friends Saturday night, Breakfast Sunday (Patachou on the Park), and I can't remember Sunday dinner (maybe El Rodeo) We pretty much haven't spent any money on us in months (baby needs stuff!) so it was a decadent treat. And when you're not drinking, it's a lot cheaper to go out! ;-)

Last weekend was our friend Natalie's shower up in Ft. Wayne. Always nice to see friends. However, I hate driving to Ft. Wayne. I don't know what it is, I used to love the open highway, but now the concept of a long drive just fills me with a light dread. And it's not gas prices (we have a Toyota Echo)

All along we've continued work on the nursery. Anika bought some prints off of Etsy and then found the perfect frames for them! I've hung the awesome stone mobile we got at our shower, and caulked the inside of the windowsills. We're pretty much to the "finishing touches" stage, although we still don't have a changing pad or crib bumper, etc.

Speaking of babies, some friends of ours had theirs on the 4th (after THIRTY-THREE hours of labor!) "Ender Angus Lewis" is that not the baddest name ever?

Anika has, for a while now, been wanting to strip down and go prancing through the woods. I believe some weird fertility juju has gotten into her brain. ;-) So Saturday we loaded up the D60 and the FM2 and headed off to Eagle Creek. Our plan was to arrive early so as to not be disturbed by regular park users. Then we get there and find out there's a friggin' triathalon going on and the park is overrun. And I forgot the sheer robes for the photoshoot. Oops.

Much unhappiness that morning.

We took another chance on Sunday and thankfully things were calm and quiet. We went, found a secluded spot in the woods, and took as many photos as we could before loosing too much blood to the hordes of mosquitos that were feasting upon us. (Current odds of West Nile infection, 3:1) If you are listed as Anika's friend on her Flickr! page, you can see one of the trite but tasteful nudes that I'm most proud of. (But only one, The wife is understandably a little modest about putting too much of the goodies on the teh internets)

After that shoot, we still had energy so we went to Crown Hill to ponce around like teenagers (except, you know, pregnant) and make SRS DRAMA ARTZ!

It was really a fabulous time, capped off by a drive out to the Airport Denny's (Best Denny's in town, bitches!) where I watched Anika eat the biggest breakfast ever.

We came home and Anika took a nap and I gave all three pugs baths and then I made creamed cabbage. Feel the excitement!

Later, Dears!

Al Hubbard, the architect of the Bush health plan, compares Americans' use of the health care system to shoppers who indiscriminately buy caviar while someone else foots the bill, just as Senator Phil Gramm departs as co-chair of John McCain's presidential campaign after calling America a "nation of whiners" in a "mental recession."

Hubbard, former assistant to the president for economic policy, spoke at a Thursday event at the Center for American Progress Action Fund. He blamed patients The PATIENTS for driving up health care costs because insurance insulates them from the real treatment costs.

He suggested that American consumers would run similarly amok in a world where employers provided "food insurance" instead of health insurance. "Pretty soon you would start buying caviar, the most expensive steak, then you would start buying way more than you needed," he said.

Hubbard put together the health care plan unsuccessfully promoted by President Bush and subsequently embraced by GOP presumptive nominee Senator John McCain. It would eliminate any incentives for employers to offer insurance, shifting the burden of health care costs onto individuals, who would be granted a meager tax break to buy health insurance. Critics say the tax credits would be at an amount far below what would be required to purchase health insurance.

About eighty percent of all health care costs are incurred by the sickest twenty percent of Americans, those whose doctors order expensive treatments for difficult diseases such as Cancer or Lupus.

Hubbard is suggesting that Americans going through serious health challenges should be shoppers first and patients second! Paraphrased from Lester Feder @ NPR.

What a load of Dingo's kidneys! Your health, and the future health of Americans a luxury. It is statements like this that shows the mind numbing disconnect that separates working Americans from the ruling class.

Our wealthy masters do not know that there are mothers feeding their kids corn flakes for dinner because that is all they can buy, or the family of four trying to get by on $222 per month in food stamps. They simply are beneath their notice.

The next level down, you know them, the executives and politicos currying favor, looking out for the vested interests of the wealthy, legislating policy favorable to the status quo. They however see working America as an obstruction to their big payoff. They vilify social programs and equate the underemployed and the poor with laziness or substance abuse playing on the fears and insecurities of Americans taking away their livelihoods and sending them to "cheaper" labor in foreign countries and pocketing the difference as profit.

I am not against profit or enterprise but I understand something of human nature. It appears to me that the economist, the ones that are for limited government and un-regulated and preferably un-monitored markets are either dense as stone or in complete denial that human nature exists at all. I think that there might even be another reason: Freedom to rape this economy for all they can so they too can join the Wealthy Masters Club.

beat around the bush
-As an expression, this phrase has been in use at least since the 16th century with the same general meaning of not speaking to the point but dodging around the matter. It comes from the sport of hunting, when hunters would hire beaters to, well, beat at the edges of a bush where birds were suspected to be hiding. The startled birds would then fly away from the beaters, leaving the hunters enough time to take aim and shoot at them. The round about actions of the beaters who would sneak up to the edges of the bush but never go straight into it.
